October started brightly and I got a lot done between rainy days. Autumn is a tad late and although I got a little autumnal colour on the day I went out, the trees were still a little too green in the first week of October. I took my Hanimex 35RAS out with me and started my October roll of Kentmere 400 after shooting a roll of colour film for a future blog. I began at Uncle Joe's and made my way towards The Old Courts when my camera decided to repeat the glitch it had in January. It kept trying to advance the film. Oh ohh!
I knew what it was and took the batteries out to stop the camera winding itself into oblivion. I had a Plan C for the day and continued on my way with my OM-1n and a roll of Plus-X that was in my bag. I had loaded it a few weeks previously and just didn't get around to it. There was no better time to shoot it and I carried on with my day.
The next day I put my camera in my dark bag and cut the film from my Hanimex 35RAS. Fortunately for me, Kentmere 400 and Plus-X have the same developing time in Bellini Euro HC so I developed them both in the same tank. Once done I hung my short strip to dry and took a closer look. Sure enough, there was a torn perforation, just like in January.
Hmmmmmm... Once is bad luck, twice is a coincidence. I think I need to check batch numbers on my Kentmere, just to be sure. I reloaded the now shorter roll of Kentmere 400 back into my Hanimex 35RAS and waited for the next sunny day, which soon came along and I headed back out around town to finish the roll. Thankfully the problem didn't repeat itself and I was able to complete my obligation for October with my 35RAS.
I developed the second part of my October roll of Kentmere 400, shot with my Hanimex 35RAS for the Frugal Film Project 2026, using Bellini Euro HC 1+31 dilution B for 6 minutes at 20 celcius and soon had it hanging to dry. I digitised it with my Nikon D700, Tamron Adaptall 2 90mm f/2.5 macro lens, Valoi 35mm film holder mounted on my Pixl-Latr and A5 sized led light pad. I processed my RAW files with Affinity Studio.
When I hung my film to dry I could see I had nicely exposed images and that stayed true as I processed the RAW files. Despite the intermittent fault, I enjoyed using my Hanimex 35RAS in October. It was unseasonably sunny for most of it, bar a couple of storms we had back to back and it shows in my photos. I also got an oddball double exposure in the bargain, so it wasn't a bad month to be fair.
Here's a few favourites from my October roll of Kentmere 400 shot with my Hanimex 35RAS for the Frugal Film Project 2026. I have placed them and more in my Frugal Film Project 2026 - Compact album on Flickr that you can visit using the link below. I hope you enjoy them.
Frugal Film Project 2026 - Compact - October
This is my personal journey into Photography, both film and digital that I began in early February 2017. Here I will share my images and thoughts on the cameras and film I have come to know and enjoy in that time and maybe one or two I didn't get along with. I don't pretend to be a professional photographer, nor do I profess to be eminently skilled at this art. I'm just an enthusiast who wants to show that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
